I have never interviewed anyone whom I didn't respect. And I always attempt to give them an opportunity to say what they feel about important issues. I don't understand interviewers who only want to be confrontational.

I suppose that if I were in the Washington press corps I might find it necessary to be confrontational. As a matter of fact, I wish more of them were aggressively confrontaional these days. Helen Thomas is my ideal Washington correspondent. However, I would have to choose someone like John McPhee for reporting on non-political topics and stories.
