This evening pianist Laurent Boubobza, violinist Eric Crambes, and cellist Xavier Gagnepain performed a recital for the Florida State Music Teachers Association Convention in St. Petersburg, Florida. The program included the Sonata for Violin and Piano and Sonata for Cello and Piano by Claude Debussy, Gaspard de la Nuit and the Trio in A for Piano, Violin, and Cello by Maurice Ravel; and Mephisto Waltz by Franz Liszt. The Gaspard and Mephisto of course solo piano pieces. Boubobza had a huge amount of difficult music on his plate tonight.
I have rarely heard such beautiful and masterful performances of these pieces. The musicianship and ensemble skills shown by the wonderful performers was a sheer joy to experience. And, as I said to them after the performance, it takes performers of their virtuosity and musicianship to make one realize what a great piece the Ravel Trio is.
They were totally in control technically, and their sensitivity and musicianship were consistently delightful. I hope to have an opportunity to hear them again.
