Thanks to Sequenza for the link to this article by Fred Kirshnit. He reorders the traditional "big five" American orchestras, and the NY Phil falls off the list. I'm not sure I agree with all of this, but it is interesting.
Andrew, I do have one bone to pick with you over your article, and that is that I think the LA Phil brass section, especially the low brass, are excellent.

Hear, hear Andrew!! My personal version of this is so much ruder, but you really said it all and kept your temper somehow. Wish I could figure out how to do that.

Kirshnit is not knowledgeable about the American orchestral scene. His article contains numerous misstatements of fact and near-breathtaking errors of judgment.
He has been writing nonsense like this for years at http://www.concertonet.com.
Even for him, however, yesterday's New York Sun article probably sets some new standard in journalistic malfeasance.
